League Week 8 Scenario: 6/18 @ Guardian Games

Ho there, ye dock-swarmin' landlubbers!

We're in the final four weeks of Season 2 of the PDXYAR League, and this is where things start to get interestin'! There be but only 35 gold separatin' the 2nd place pirate from the scallywag in 6th place. With four games to go, it may come down to the final game to determine who gets to take on Redgoat for the coveted PDXYAR trophy!

Tonight, we have a scenario presented by Captain Drakestongue which embraces the oldest and most revered aspect of piratin'... stabbing yer mate in the back. This be a team game, and while yer initial alliance might serve you well in the first few turns, there be plenty o' incentive fer all players to strike up some double-dealin'.

Tonight's game is being graciously hosted by Guardian Games on their monthly "Adult Game Night." Meaning, you've got to bring a bit of yer own coin ($10) in order to partake in the grog and victuals that they will be servin'. Oh, and this be a 21+ game only, so leave yer powder monkeys at yer home port.

One more note: The scenario calls for this to be a sealed game, which means that you must purchase at least three packs from the venue to play. What packs might be on hand? Well, rumor has it that there may be a smatterin' of South China Seas, Mysterious Islands and maybe even some Crimson Coast!

- Redgoat

. . . Keep your enemies closer.
Privateer: Captain Drakestongue
Location: Guardian Games - Portland, OR
Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Requirements:
- Sealed Event! (a minimum of 3 packs, value box or tin)
- 40 point fleet
- Treasure: 8 coins 20 value
- 3 islands
- 3 terrain

Setup:
Normal setup except before selecting home islands, each player will draw coins out of a "hat" to determine who your ally will be to start the game. (There will be pairs of matching coins to determine who is allied with whom.) Then the packs will be ripped and 15 min. to build fleets begins. After fleets are chosen, roll off to select team turn order (Each team rolls once and allies can't be next to one another.)

Special Rules:
Each alliance can share crew from their pulls, but not ships - each person builds their own fleet, but can trade / give / borrow crew from their "ally" to build their 40.

Gameplay:
Game starts normally. Every one has a home island, etc. Each alliance member can use each other's home island as their own to deposit gold because each alliances' gold is halved for your individual totals (ie. if your island ends up with 20 and your partner has 14, you split the 34 at 17 each. Odd number of gold? Round down and scuttle the extra gold.)

If you are attacked in the game you are allowed one free "Parlay." However, gold goes to your partner instead of the person you've just parlayed AND you become their ally. Therefore, you are now splitting your gold with them (and any other alliances they have). The original ally is on his / her own until he / she attacks and someone else uses parlay, pays their (ex-)ally and joins the new alliance.

You can only switch alliances once using Parlay. AND you can also fire on your own alliances. Once you do, you have broken your alliance and they are free to form another alliance. When an alliance is formed, that gives the ally (allies) instant shares of their gold on their home island as pooled with the rest of that alliance.

You CAN dock at your ally's home island and take as much gold as you can carry, but this doesn't break the alliance (pirate), but if they shoot at you (or you shoot at them) the alliance is broken. Oh, and you can be shot at whilst docked at said ally's home island.

Parlay can only be used ONCE per game to switch alliance - only one alliance switch via parlay per game, but if you have that ability, it can be used normally.

League Week 7 Scenario: 6/8 @ Knightfall Games

Hey there sailor,

Now that we're past the halfway point in Season 2, things ought to get mighty interesting. At the top of the standings be yours truly. Hot on me heels be Drakestongue, the curmudgeonly Dogan and M.F.B. Hpred (he of the most righteous beard). Of course, we all will be required to drop our lowest four scoring weeks, so there is still plenty of time for the rest of you scallywags to catch up!

This week's scenario is presented by Sven Forkbeard, a new addition to PDXYAR's ranks. Though Sven's exploits in the icy northlands are well chronicled, his journey into Port Land is just beginning. Judging from this scenario, old Sven might have more than a few tricks up his longcoat!

Scenario: Colonies! (We're a Long Way From Home)
Privateer: Sven Forkbeard, Emperor of the North
Location: Knightfall Games - Beaverton, OR
Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

REQUIREMENTS:
  • 50 point fleets
  • 3 islands, 3 terrain per player
  • 9 treasure coins totalling 20 gold per player

SETUP:
  • There are no home islands in this scenario - players begin the game with their ships at the edge of the table.
  • Players roll for first player as normal.
  • In order, players place their ships with each ship's stern touching the edge of the play area. Ships can start together or spread out, but may not start within 6L of any other player's ships. Ship placement occurs BEFORE island and terrain placement. Mercenary ships are placed the same way as all other ships for this scenario.
  • Each player places 3 islands and 3 terrain pieces normal. Islands may not be placed within 3L of any player's ships. Terrain may not be placed within 1S of any player's ships. Islands may be placed closer than 3L to each other (but never closer than 2L) ONLY if necessary in order to keep all islands at least 3L away from all players' starting ships. All other island and terrain placement rules are as normal. All islands are considered wild islands. Place 3 treasure coins per island.

PLAY:
  • Once per game, if a player has explored a wild island and all Mysterious Island text and unique treasures that stay face up on the island have been resolved, that player may declare that island his Colony, and should place a marker on the island to indicate this. The player who has the most gold on his Colony island and/or aboard his ships at the end of the game is the winner.
  • COLONIES ARE NOT HOME ISLANDS. Any and all game text that refers to a home island DOES NOT apply to a Colony island. Your ships may be attacked while docked at your Colony, and you may not give your ships repair actions (so bring a Shipwright!). Home island thieves have no effect on Colonies, and ships with the Eternal keyword do NOT appear at your Colony island when sunk. Unique Treasure that refer to your home island, such as Jail, have no effect.
  • Mercenary ships may dock at Colony islands.
  • COLONIES ARE NOT WILD ISLANDS EITHER. Any and all game text that refers to a wild island does not apply to a Colony island, either. Once an island has been declared a Colony, any Mysterious Island text becomes inactive for the rest of the game. You may not explore an opponent's Colony and steal their treasure,
  • RAIDING A COLONY. If your ship docks at an opponent's Colony, you may attempt to raid as a free action. This works sort of like a boarding party: the attacker and the defender each roll a d6. The attacker adds the number of masts on the ship whose action is instigating the raid, plus any boarding bonuses provided by game text of the ship or crew. The defender adds the total point value of all crew on the island (NOT on ships docked at the island, they have to be on the island itself). The high roll is the winner and may either kill an opponent's crew or take a treasure coin (if available). There may be only one insitgating ship per Raid, and the same Colony may only be raided once per turn.
  • MUSKETEERS. For this scenario, as a free action a Musketeer crew may fire their 3S cannon from any point on their player's Colony island if they are present on the island (not on a ship docked at the island). Multiple Musketeers will offer no additional shots (only 1 per Colony island). If you have a Musketeer and a Marine on your Colony island, they may each fire once per turn.
  • Please note that declaring a Colony island is optional. If you want, you can try to keep all your gold on your ships and hide in fog banks until the end of the game, but your opponents will no doubt tease you mercilessly for it. Also note that gold on ships in fog banks DOES NOT count towards the winning total at end of game.
  • The game ends when the last piece of treasure is picked up from a wild island and unloaded at a Colony island, or if over half of the starting ships are derelict or sunk (as in a normal game).

ADDITIONAL NOTES:
  • You may not establish a Colony on an island where a face up Unique Treasure (such as Altar of the Loa) is in play.
  • If a face down Trees Unique Treasure is in play on a Colony island, it is discarded without effect (however, Trees may be used before declaring the island your Colony).
  • Abandoned Crew have no point value and as such will not contribute to Colony defense (although you may kill an Abandoned Crew to satisfy losing a Colony Raid, and Abandoned Crew Musketeers function the same way normal Musketeers do in this scenario).

Season 2 Standings!

Avast!

We're six weeks into Season 2 of the PDXYAR League, which marks the official half-way point. From here on out, you can find weekly updated standings posted here. Each ranked score listed below has two categories: Ranked Gold and Total Gold.

Ranked Gold is a player's overall gold amount minus their lowest four scoring weeks. This is used to establish official rankings.

Total Gold includes gold accumulated by a player throughout all weeks of the season. This count is used only in the instance of a tiebreaker.

PDXYAR League Season 2 Rankings
(updated through week six)

Now, some of you scallywags might be needin' a refresher on what exactly is at stake this Season. The overall winner of Season 2 (the pirate with the highest Ranked Gold score) will assume ownership of the PDXYAR League trophy, in all its skullduggerous glory!

In addition to this righteous symbol of piratical dominance, the following prizes will also be awarded:
  • First Place: sealed box (36 count) of Pirates of the South China Seas booster packs
  • Second Place: 1/2 sealed box (18 count) of Pirates of the Crimson Coast booster packs
  • Third Place: Pirates of Davy Jones Curse board game & Pirates of Mysterious Island gift box
That should be enough to re-whet yer collective beaks!

See you all in Week 7...

League Week 6 Scenario: 6/2 @ Ancient Wonders

After a one-week hiatus, we're back! We've officially extended out Season 2 of the League by one week. Our finale will now be held on Friday, July 17 (location TBD). Look for updates very soon on the venues for the last two weeks in League play.

So, now that you've had almost a fortnight to cool yer heels... time for the plunderin' to continue! This, er... interesting scenario is courtesy of our own nautical curmudgeon, Dogan!

Scenario: Cry Baby "BUT" Pirates
Privateer: Dogan
Location: Ancient Wonders - Tualatin, OR
Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Requirements:
50pt
9 coins 28 value (just cause)
3 islands
3 terrain BUT can only be reef, Sargasso sea, and/or fog banks

Setup:
Determine turn order the typical way and place islands as normal, BUT when placing terrain place it so that it touches an island. Doesn't matter how much it touches (go ahead cover up an entire side of an island or just a tip). Choose home islands, and place 4 coin per island; remove the excess coins from play, BUT don't reveal them until end of game.

Special Rules:
When exiting a fog bank, if your roll to exit places you on the island you become docked at that island (alongside the fog bank nearest your home island), BUT eliminate 1 mast, 1 gold, or 1 crew.
